Yum! Well, at least for the grasshopper. I shoot quite a bit of really delicious food, but fresh sunflowers have never made the list. Obviously he doesn’t care, as you can see the amount of chomping going on. I was shooting beef cattle on a ranch southwest of Dallas, and decided to take some shots of sunflowers for Aynsley. While I was doing that, the rancher pointed out this little guy, so I hooked up my macro gear and went to town. It’s always fun to cut loose and make pretty pictures. When you add in the fact that I’m on a ranch early in the morning instead of sitting in my office, there’s nothing better.
If you have ever witnessed an artist at work, you will probably understand the following scenario:
Much to my surprise, I came home from work last week to find that my living room had been transformed into a temporary editing studio. All of my coffee table accessories had been removed, as well as the pillows and throws on the couches. The accessories had been replaced with tons of small cutouts of photographs, which now covered the coffee table, two sofas, and the floor. Yes, my husband is definitely a photographer.
From April to November it seems like we eat, drink, breathe, sleep, and of course shoot weddings. Well actually, not a lot of sleep, but you get the picture. The end result is thousands and thousands of pictures, which means lots of great fresh new content. With wedding season starting to slow down a bit, we thought it would be the perfect time to get our edit on.
When it comes to photo editing Jason and I use a process we learned back in our good ole college days in the studio. Sometimes you just have to step away from the screen, and do things the old-fashioned way.
Let the editing begin.
First we gather all of the thousands of images and do a mass edit to narrow down. Let me tell you, this is not fun. Fortunately Jason gets to do that part! Once the big basic edit is done, we narrow the images down to our top favorites from each wedding.
Next, we print off thumbnails of all of these images so that we can compare them alongside one another. This is also the point where the Famous Amos cookies come out. They make great editing fuel.
The third stage consists of cutting all of the images out. This takes a while…
Once they have all been cut out, we arrange the images for the second major edit. We go through the basic selects from each individual wedding and choose our top favorites.
This is the stage where Jason and I do a lot of talking as we look over images from all different types of weddings. As you can see, the pugs chimed in as well. Even at such an early age, they have a very discerning opinion, and are quite helpful so long as they don’t relieve themselves on our selects.
Eventually we will narrow the images down to the ones that are the most beautiful and emotionally compelling. This is where things get tough, and Jason and I become extremely nitpicky. From here we take the images and separate them into groups of important stages from the wedding. We will go through and look for the absolute best of everything: images of the bride and groom preparing for the walk down the aisle; the kiss; the couple’s portraits; the prettiest venues and cakes; the partying and of course the grand exit. With so many beautiful moments to choose from this process can take hours to complete.
Finally we narrow somehow narrow it down to under 30 images. The images are arranged and rearranged again and again until we find the perfect flow of imagery. Our final cutting edge photo strip is put together (see the photo) and then we sit back and take a deep breath. And eat more cookies. As you can see, its been a very busy season!
We want to thank all of our lovely couples for such a fun and exciting wedding season. We hope you will view Jason’s new wedding portfolio and see what all he has been up to!
As you would probably have guessed, I have taken more photos of our pups. I may have to buy a new hard drive dedicated for pugs, this promises to get out of control really fast. They are growing like weeds, so we are trying to document as much of the puppy stage as possible, just not the housebreaking part (too much running around and enthusiastic yelling to hold a camera steady). I will say I’ve never been so excited to see a dog use the bathroom outside.
Any way, we introduced our pups to their uncles yesterday, and it was quite the affair. They had never seen such gigantic beasts, especially ones that looked like them. There was a little bit of intimidation, but in no time Tank and Loafer were running their much larger counterparts all over the house, nipping heels all the way. Perhaps I should do video as well, stay tuned!
We decided it would be great to have a big family portrait with Ayns and I, her dad, and Aynsley’s brothers/our pugs’ uncles. Check it out. I can do family portraits for sure! Many thanks to Richard for firing the camera, and get ready for more shoots that hopefully up the ante in creativity, chaos and insanity. Enjoy!

Aynsley and I had twins last week, they came to us at 7 weeks! How amazing is that? So yes, Aynsley and I are now proud parents of two beautiful pug puppies: Tank and Loafer. We had our first portrait session last night, and as you can see, they are fabulous models. Loafer is the top pic and Tank is on the bottom, how awesome are those faces? In case you didn’t know, I had never been around pugs very much until I started dating Aynsley. Her dad had a very rambunctious pair of pugs, whom I have written about before and are now proud uncles, that I absolutely fell in love with. There is something about a pug personality that sucks you in, and before you know it you are a pug lover. So of course we couldn’t wait to have two of our own, and I know that everyone would enjoy a quick look at our babies. Who knows, we may even start a web gallery on my website that is nothing but pug pictures. You would hire me if you saw 300 images documenting how precious they were, right?
Hello all,
I wanted to take a minute and share some images that we took of Savannah a little while back. She is a very talented singer (who could model just as easily I might add), who needed some fresh and interesting portraits to take with her for auditions. I shoot a very wide range of portraits; doctors to brides; fashion, seniors, businessmen and women, and so much more. Portrait photography is one of my favorite things to do as a photographer; I love working with people to make them look their best.
For Savannah’s portrait session, she wanted to do a shoot that was interesting and different, and create images that would really grab your attention. Dynamic and dramatic were the keywords here. She also has a very defined personal style, and wanted to shoot in an environment that would give a strong contrast to this style and help her really stand out. So, after discussing all of these needs, we found a set of backgrounds that had plenty of hard lines to contrast the soft flowing clothing that she would be wearing. We lit everything dramatically, and just had a lot of fun.
As you can see, the images turned out great, and she got the exact look she wanted. When I shoot these types of sessions, I want my subject to feel like a fashion model: beautiful, confident, and full of life and energy. We always work extensively with all of our clients, no matter who they are, to make sure that they are comfortable around the camera and able to give their most natural expressions. After all, portraiture is all about capturing the true personality of someone.

In case you haven’t heard, the Dallas/Fort Worth area had a record 12.5 inch snowfall last week. Being a photographer, I was of course out and about to capture some of its beauty. I must say that there really is nothing like snow; it makes everything look so clean and perfect. I always think of a Wonderland, no not that Wonderland, whenever snow comes south of the Rio Grande (though that doesn’t happen often where we live). Needless to say, I have plenty of beautiful photographs of our trees, but the real crowning jewel was, and is, The Boys.
This will not be the last time they are featured on this blog, not by a longshot, so introductions are in order: The pug on the left is Wally, full name William Wallace. The big pug on the right is Max, aka Maximus Decimus Meridius. In case you couldn’t tell, they are of fierce lineage, albeit two slightly different periods in history. No matter.
These pugs, known collectively as ‘The Boys,’ belong to my father-in-law, but we are basically their godparents (Aynsley may even be considered their sister, I’m not sure how that works). So any way, we took The Boys out in the snow for a good time, and Aynsley got them to chase her around for treats. In the end, we came out with a dashing photo of The Boys, looking like the untameable beasts that they are. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
