Dallas Photographer Pop Quiz, Part II

Jason Kindig, Dallas Photographer

Welcome back everyone! This is Aynsley here, getting a chance to write for my Dallas photographer husband Jason Kindig.

I started off yesterday’s blog with a quiz, what a fun way to spend your work break huh?!  It was a very easy quiz that’s goal was to show that just because you purchase something nice whether it be a top of the line mixer, set of golf clubs, sewing machine, saw or camera does not make you a pro. It seems pretty straight forward, but you would be surprised how many people believe that great equipment makes you a professional.

One of the most prominent areas we see this taking place in is with photography.

Great Camera + Human ≠ Great Photographer

It seems these days that everyone and their dog is a Dallas photographer. Just take a few seconds to think about the ‘photographers’ you know. Who doesn’t have an uncle who is a photographer? What about a new mom looking for extra cash? What about your business partner’s college daughter who likes to take pictures between classes? If you really start thinking about it you probably know a few people that fall into the hobbyist turned “pro” category.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I am all about people who find a hobby they love. I think it is really important to take up something whether it is baking, cycling, gardening, sports, the list could go on and on. Having hobbies keeps us active, keeps us creative and keeps us happy! I love to decorate, but that doesn’t make me an interior designer.

With regards to the photography hobbyist turned “professional”, a lot of this is due to the huge technological advances in digital photography. It is almost as if people believe that skill is no longer required to take great photographs. What a tragedy.

As I mentioned at the beginning of my blog, I am married to Dallas photographer, Jason Kindig, so I get to see this first hand. I cannot tell you how many people have come to us with stories and a need for new photography after some pretty bad experiences. You hear stories from businesses who received headshots that looked like they were straight out of a horror film with dark eyes and ghostlike lighting. Then there are both corporate and private events where the key moments where either too dark or too blurry to use. You also hear about the botched Photoshop work of people trying to compensate on the back end for their lack of photography skills. Sadly the list could go on and on.

While photography is a great hobby, for some people it needs to remain their hobby. Leave professional photography to the professionals who understand lighting, positioning, color, spacing, detail, sharpness, and all of the technical aspects to making beautiful imagery.

As a Dallas photographer’s wife, I always find it amusing how many of my friends think I am a photographer. There is a big misconception that because I am married to a photographer, I must be one. Or maybe it is because he has nice cameras. Whenever I am out with friends and there is a picture to be taken, I am always handed all of the cameras.

The purpose of these two blogs is to simply remind you of the importance of professional photographers. While hobbyists are great, when it comes to your business’s photography such as headshots or portraits or your upcoming event, leave your photography to the professionals. Take time studying your potential photographer and take a close look at their Dallas corporate photography portfolios. Professionals in any field are well worth the money. Getting things done right the first time around is always the better way to go.
